Prepare Your Schools for Potential Hurricane Beryl Impact
Hurricane Beryl made landfall Monday on Grenada's Carriacou Island as a Category 5 hurricane. It is now heading west toward Mexico. Forecasters are uncertain of Beryl's path after it crosses Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, but projections indicate Texas will likely be impacted. In the event Hurricane Beryl turns toward Texas over the holiday weekend, Fund members should prepare for the potential of tornadoes, high winds, and/or flooding.
Mitigate Damage
Take these steps now, if they can be done safely, to help mitigate damage from the storm. For more preparation tips, see HSB's Hurricane and Flooding Tip Sheets:
- Board up windows.
- Secure or remove equipment and other loose outdoor property that could become dangerous projectiles.
- Turn propane tanks off to reduce the risk of explosion.
- Prepare for electrical power interruptions.
- Ensure backup power for sump pumps, which remove accumulated water.
- Elevate electrical equipment and accessories such as surge protectors and power cords.
- Move vehicles from lower-lying areas to higher ground.
